SKE Distribution Low-Loss Headers (Hydraulic Balancers) – Basic Versions
Function and Application
The SKE distribution low-loss header, also known as a hydraulic balancer, is designed to hydraulically separate the boiler circuit from the heating circuit. It is primarily used in medium- and high-power heating systems (starting from 25 kW and typically from 40 kW upward), which may include:
-
One or more boilers (solid fuel, gas condensing, or heat pump-based)
-
Multiple heating zones or circuits (e.g. underfloor heating, radiator heating, and domestic hot water (DHW))
In such complex systems, the SKE eliminates the need for manual flow balancing between pumps. It allows each circuit to operate independently and without interference, ensuring optimal pump performance and stable hydraulic conditions.
Key Features
-
Hydraulic Separation: Enables independent operation of boiler and heating circuits, preventing mutual pump interference.
-
Integrated Desilter and Air Vent: Enhances system reliability by removing sludge and air from the circuit.
-
SMART Magnetic Separator: A built-in neodymium magnet captures fine magnetic particles, preventing corrosion and rust caused by circulating debris.
-
Boiler Protection: Prevents low return water temperature to solid fuel boilers (avoiding condensation and corrosion).
-
Flexible Installation: The unit can be installed in any orientation, adapting to site-specific requirements.
Operating Scenarios
-
Heat Demand = Boiler Output
The system operates under equilibrium. Boiler output matches the heating circuit demand. -
Heat Demand < Boiler Output
When thermostatic valves (e.g. on radiators) begin closing, excess heat circulates back through the hydraulic balancer. This signals the boiler to reduce output or shut down. -
Heat Demand > Boiler Output
Increased suction from the heating circuit through the balancer signals the boiler to increase power to meet demand.
Available Models and Applications
| Model | Key Features | Recommended For |
|---|---|---|
| SKE 40 / 40 2D+ / 40 3D / 40 2K | Includes boiler protection against low return temps | Solid fuel boiler systems |
| SKE 55 2DC / 55 3DC | Optimized for high efficiency | Condensing gas boilers & heat pumps |
Why Choose the SKE Hydraulic Balancer?
-
Simplifies multi-circuit system design and commissioning
-
Enhances system longevity and efficiency
-
Reduces maintenance through built-in magnetic filtration and air removal
-
Compatible with modern high-efficiency boilers and heat pumps
-
Modular models available for varying system sizes and configurations

The Low-Loss Header, also known as a Hydraulic Balancer, is designed to separate the boiler’s circulation from the heating system, suitable for medium to high-power systems (25 kW and above, ideal for an average house). It is used in setups with one or more boilers and various heating circuits, such as floor heating, radiators, or hot utility water. The LLH automatically manages flow separation, eliminating the need for manual balancing of pump flows. Its construction includes a desilter and air vent, offering additional benefits of system cleaning and air removal while protecting the boiler from low-temperature corrosion of the return water.
Operational Modes:
- When the heat requirement equals the boiler’s power, the system operates in balance.
- If the requirement is less than the boiler’s capacity (e.g., thermostatic valves are closed), some heat returns from the LLH, signaling the boiler to decrease output or switch off.
- If the requirement exceeds the boiler’s capacity, increased pump suction signals the boiler to produce more heat.
Features of the Low Loss Header SHE 2”:
- Max flow: 7.4 m³/h
- Max power: 156 kW
- Connectors: 4 x 2" male threads
- Nominal pressure: 10 bar
- Max temperature: 110°C
- Capacity: 4 liters (or 1 liter in some configurations)
- Vent and drain valves included
Advantages for investors:
- Up to 30% longer boiler service life through protection from low return water temperatures
- Enhanced operational comfort via system desiltering and aeration
- Up to 30% longer pump service life due to smooth, undisturbed operation
- Faster boiler reactions to changing demands
- Cost savings of up to 50% compared to traditional 3- or 4-way valves
Advantages for installers:
- No need for complex system regulation, thanks to automatic flow management
- Reduced claims caused by air locking or improper operation
Variants Available:
- SHE – LLH: Power range from 40 to 420 kW
- SHE-OC: Insulated with polyprene shell, power from 40 to 156 kW (up to 420 kW can be insulated with ROCKWOOL upon request)
Customer satisfaction benefits from reliable, efficient heating operation with less maintenance and fewer issues.
