First, it acts as a buffer tank, adding necessary thermal mass to the circuit (for both hot and cold water). This stored volume significantly reduces the frequent on/off switching (cycling) of the heat pump, leading to greater efficiency and a longer lifespan for the compressor.

Second, it serves as a hydraulic separator (Low Loss Header). This decouples the heat pump's circuit from the building's heating circuit, guaranteeing that the heat pump always maintains the correct, stable flow rate, regardless of demand from different zones.
